About Us
The Yoga Association of Tasmania Inc. (YATI) is run by volunteers dedicated to supporting high quality Satyananda Yoga in Tasmania for the benefit of the community. YATI is the supplier for the Satyananda Yoga practice book, Yoga Day by Day and will host occasional yoga events as well as regular kirtan and havan.
Keep an eye on the website for workshops, retreats and events organised by YATI during 2012!
The contribution of all involved is in the spirit of karma yoga, the yoga of action, and seva, selfless service. This reflects the values of the Satyananda Yoga tradition, in which yoga touches all aspects of life.
About Satyananda Yoga
In Satyananda Yoga classes you learn yoga postures (asanas), breath techniques (pranayamas), relaxation (yoga nidra) and a variety of meditations. These are taught in a systematic way that means you can gradually develop flexibility and strength in your body at the same time as settling and focusing your mind.
Beginners are systematically taught the foundation practices. As you progress through the levels your body becomes more flexible and the mind develops steadiness. Meditation and themes that deepen your understanding are also introduced.
All practices are taught in a way that brings meditative awareness to every aspect of the class.
The founder of this style of yoga, Swami Satyananda of India, has adapted the ancient practices to meet modern needs without compromising their authenticity and integrity. The wide range of practices and techniques are complemented by the philosophy and understandings which are the foundation of all yoga. This approach enables yoga to be used for managing our relationship with life in all ways: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
Swami Satyananda lived from 1923 until 2009. While for many years he travelled widely to spread yoga “from shore to shore and door to door”, he spent the final 20 years of his life uplifting the lives of the rural people of the region where he lived, one of the poorest in India.
His successor, Swami Niranjanananda, continues the work of inspiring the global yoga movement. He resides at the Bihar School of Yoga, in the state of Bihar, India.
YATI has close links with Satyananda Yoga organizations internationally and in Australia. In Australia it is affiliated with the Satyananda Yoga Academy, NSW. There are two Satyananda Yoga retreat centres in Australia, at Rocklyn, Victoria and Mangrove Mt, NSW. Tasmanian students often visit these to learn more about yoga and spend time away from the demands of everyday life.
As well as providing information on Satyananda Yoga teachers in Tasmania, YATI can also provide information regarding yoga outreach in schools, community centres and workplaces.
